SEAL

What is a seals and what purpose does it serve?

A seal is a mechanical part that joins elements together to form a watertight unit. This type of product is mainly made from different types of rubber (NBR, FPM, EPDM), polyurethane or silicone, and comes in a variety of shapes and sizes. Whether for a new installation or the replacement of a defective seal, 123Bearing offers a wide range of seals. There are several gasket models with different materials and profiles, depending on their use and the fluids with which they will be in contact. Indeed, the choice of seal is important, as it must correspond to the application for which it is used.

What are the different seal categories?

Today, the most commonly used seals are SPI seals, hydraulic seals, O-rings and wiper seals.

Rotary Shaft Seal

The SPI seal plays an essential role on most rotating mechanical parts. In particular, it seals rotating parts to prevent leakage. This model can be ordered as single-lip or double-lip. They are particularly used in the automotive industry, on clutches, gearboxes and crankshafts.

Hydraulic seal

Hydraulic seals are used to seal and connect moving parts. It is a type of product that can withstand the pressure exerted. This pressure can be greater or lesser, depending on the material selected. This product is often used as a piston or cylinder seal.

O-ring

The O-ring is a rubber seal in the form of a ring. It is used to seal fluids in hydraulic and pneumatic systems that are moving statically or dynamically.

wiper seal

The wiper seal is a rubber seal that is positioned on translating shafts, such as hydraulic cylinders. It ensures a good seal and prevents the intrusion of contaminants (liquid, dust, etc.) into the design.

123Bearing offers an even wider range of seals, including piston, pneumatic, V-ring, X-ring, washer, cord and NILOS seals. The choice of seal depends essentially on the application, movement and fluids with which it will be in contact. To choose the ideal seal, it's important to clearly define the characteristics of the application.

When should I change my seal?

It goes without saying that the seal should be changed if you notice a leak or poor sealing. Apart from that, there's really no fixed rule for determining when the change should be made. It is advisable to do so as soon as you have to dismantle the seal, even for a simple overhaul. This is because the shape of the gasket has been adjusted in relation to the initial assembly, so it's a complex task to adapt the gasket perfectly to its new position. If this product has not been disassembled, the change depends on the use you make of it and the condition of the seal.

How to find your seals at 123Bearing?

It's important to know that these products cannot be identified by their part numbers. They are not universal and may differ from one manufacturer to another. That's why it's necessary to take the dimensions. If you're looking for a spiral wound gasket, a hydraulic seal or a wiper seal, we need to measure inside diameter, outside diameter and thickness. For O-rings, it's the inside diameter and torus measurements that will help us provide you with the right solution.
